Envisioning Safer Roads

A staff member at The Organization for the Safe Routes Partnership sent this map to list serves members. Luckily, the Bi-State MPO was on that list serve and received the link to this new mapping tool. It is one of the most useful I have seen in looking up where automobile crashes have occurred. This information can be especially useful for those who walk, bike, run or just want to be very careful in certain areas. Fortunately, within the Bi-State Metropolitan Planning Area, we have not had near the crashes and fatalities of other areas. However, one is too many. We hope you will find this smart technology useful!

Greener Doesn’t Just Apply to the Carbon Footprint… Remember to Eat Your Veggies – They Are Getting Much Fresher

In a recent article published by Union Pacific entitled, “Union Pacific’s Refrigerated Boxcar Fleet Delivers ‘Greener’ Produce for Customers”, refrigerated boxcars were described as using the latest technology to keep meat, poultry, dairy and frozen foods fresher as they reach the grocery shelf.  Union Pacific described it’s fleet of 4,950 refrigerated rail cars as more environmentally friendly than ever.  The technology utilized in this process includes the installation of Tier Ivi diesel refrigeration units that reduce diesel particulate emissions by 50 percent over the previous refrigeration units.  Further, other latest technological innovations included global positioning satellite monitoring to track rail car location as well as monitor temperature including fresh air exchange and diagnostics.

Not only will we be receiving much fresher foods, the reduction in emissions is calculated to almost four times that of regular truck delivery.  Eating your veggies to improve your health takes on a couple different meanings thanks to this smart technology.
